ROMA – Da Sydney a Washington, da Buenos Aires ad Hong Kong, passando da Parigi, Puertorico, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Londra ed ovviamente Roma e Milano. Il #FencingMob ha colto nel segno.
Per una domenica, la scherma è uscita in strada, “invadendo” luoghi simbolo, lungomari, spiagge, suscitando curiosità, interesse ed entusiasmo.
Il “Flash mob più grande del Mondo” promosso dalla Federazione Italiana Scherma ha visto una partecipazione che è andata oltre alle più rosee attese. Sono state oltre 70 le città in Italia ad essere “invase” per qualche minuto dalla scherma, mentre nel Mondo sono state oltre 50, nei cinque continenti. Complessivamente, sono stati coinvolti circa 8000 schermidori, di ogni età.
Maschere, spade, fioretti e divise hanno brillato sotto al Colosseo a Roma, in piazza Duomo a Milano, sulle gondole di Venezia, ai piedi della Torre Pendente di Pisa ed in piazza Plebiscito e Castel dell’Ovo a Napoli, affacciati sui Sassi di Matera, nel giardino della Reggia di Caserta o sotto lo sguardo dei Bronzi di Riace a Reggio Calabria (solo per citare alcune delle location più famose), mentre fuori dai confini nazionali, la scherma ha fatto capolino a Parigi sotto la Torre Eiffel, a Bruxelles dinanzi l’Atomium, a Trafalgar Square a Londra e dinanzi il Campidoglio a Washington. Scatti assolutamente didascalici, così come quelli dinanzi la Sidney Opera House, o con dietro l’eccezionale sky-line di Shangai e quello di Hong Kong, o ai piedi dell’Obelisco a Buenos Aires, sino a Tunisi.
La scherma è salita inoltre sin sopra alle Dolomiti, con il FencingMob ai 2239 metri di altezza della Terrazza Pordoi, ma anche in riva al mare, con gli Azzurrini di spada che si sono immersi sino alle ginocchia nel mare di Formia. Il punto più a sud raggiunto è però stata la Terra del Fuoco, in Argentina, con l’affondo ripreso a Ushauia.
Il fencingmob più numeroso si è svolto invece ad Hong Kong, dato che sono stati oltre 140 i partecipanti coinvolti dalla Hong Kong Fencing School che, nella notte italiana tra sabato e domenica, hanno indossato maschera e spada tirando di scherma.
L’iniziativa è stata lanciata dalla Federazione Italiana Scherma per “promuovere” la disciplina prima dell’inizio della stagione agonistica. L’adesione convinta ed entusiasta da parte di numerose società in Italia e di diverse federazioni a livello mondiale, ha rappresentato la testimonianza della grande passione che batte nel cuore della grande famiglia della scherma.
“Senza falsa retorica – commenta il Presidente della Federazione Italiana Scherma, Giorgio Scarso – possiamo affermare d’aver vissuto una giornata storica non solo per la scherma italiana ma anche per l’intero movimento mondiale. Ricevere foto e video dai cinque Continenti è stata la prova non solo di come la disciplina sia oramai diffusa in tutto il Mondo, ma anche di come il linguaggio dello sport accomuni tutti. Inoltre è stata anche la testimonianza delle potenzialità del movimento schermistico internazionale, in termini di promozione, e dell’immenso potere comunicativo dei social network, attraverso i quali tutto è partito e si è sviluppato”.
Nelle 24 ore di domenica 7 settembre, dall’arrivo delle prime immagini da Sidney sino alle ultime giunte dalla costa del Pacifico degli Stati Uniti, sono state oltre 400.000 le persone raggiunte su Facebook dalla pagina della Federazione Italiana Scherma, che ha registrato oltre 55.000 interazioni (tra likes, commenti e condivisioni).
Su Twitter, il profilo @federscherma ha registrato più di 50.000 visualizzazioni, mentre l’hashtag #Fencingmob ha raggiunto 44.874 accounti e 175.533 impressions.
Su Instagram, invece, sono stati oltre 120.000 i likes sulle foto caricate dal profilo federale @FederScherma, mentre complessivamente le foto caricate con l’hashtag sul social network dedicato alle immagini sono state oltre 400 provenienti da account di tutto il Mondo.

For one Sunday, fencing was out on the street, “invading” landmarks, promenades, and beaches, arousing curiosity, interest, and enthusiasm. “
The Greatest Fencing Flashmob in the World” launched by the Italian Fencing Federation (FIS) has seen a participation beyond the most optimistic expectations.
In Italy, fencers took over 71 cities for few minutes, in the world, over 50 cities in all five continents. Overall, according to a first estimate, more than 7,500 fencers of all ages participated in the worldwide flasmob.
Masks, épées, foils and fencing uniforms stood out next to the Colosseum in Rome, in Piazza Duomo in Milan, on the gondolas of Venice, at the foot of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, in Piazza Plebiscito and Castel dell’Ovo in Naples, overlooking the Sassi of Matera, in the park of the Royal Palace of Caserta, under the gaze of the Riace bronzes in Reggio Calabria… just to mention some of the most famous locations. Outside Italy, fencing did show off in Paris under the Eiffel Tower, in Brussels by the Atomium, in Trafalgar Square in London, and before the Capitol in Washington, DC. they are all iconic pictures, as those by the Sydney Opera House, or with the the extraordinary skyline of Shanghai and Hong Kong, or at the foot of the Obelisk in Buenos Aires.
Fencing also climbed to the top of the Dolomites, with FencingMob at Sass Pordoi at an elevation of 2239 m above sea level, but also down to the sea, with the Under 20 national Italian épée squad in pre-season training camp, in water to their knees on the beach in Formia. But the southernmost point reached was in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, with the assault photographed in Ushauia.
Fencingmob with the largest number of participants was in Hong Kong involving over 140 young fencers from The Hong Kong Fencing School who, while still during the night between Saturday and Sunday in Italy, put on their masks and started fencing.
The initiative was launched by the Italian Fencing Federation to “promote” the discipline before the start of the new season. The wholehearted and enthusiastic reception by many clubs in Italy and several federations around the world, is testimony of the great passion in the heart of the great fencing family. “Without false modesty—said Giorgio Scarso, President of the Italian Fencing Federation—we can say that today we’ve lived through a historic day not only for Italian fencing but also for the entire world of fencing. To receive photos and video from four continents was evidence not only of how fencing is now widespread throughout the world, but also that the language of sport unites all. Moreover, this was also a testimony of the potential international fencing can have in terms of promotion, and the huge communication power of social networks, through which it all started and could be developed.”
In the course of 24 hours on Sunday, September 7, from the arrival of the first images from Sidney until the last ones from the Pacific coast of the United States, over 400,000 people reached on the Facebook page of the Italian Fencing Federation, which logged more than 62,000 interactions (including likes, comments, and shares).
On Twitter, the @federscherma tag registered more than 120,000 views, while the hashtag #Fencingmob reached 536,012 accounts and 619,878 impressions.
On Instagram, the uploaded photos from @FederScherma profile got more than 120,000 likes, while overall uploaded photos with the hashtag on social network associated to the pictures were from over 400 accounts around the world.
